The
number one goal in my classes is to create a fun
and relaxed environment. Now, this may seem overly
simple, but in fact research has shown that we learn
more effectively when in an environment in which
we feel comfortable and relaxed. This has been shown
to be especially true in the language classroom.
For this reason I try to make every class into a
group of friends coming together to have a good
time and learn. This is true for tiny tots and adults
as well. If we feel we are among friends then we
arenft afraid to take chances and make mistakes.
This is important because it is through our mistakes
that we learn language.
Of
course it isnft all just fun and games, we do after
all want to learn something as well. For this reason
every class gives students the chance practice the
four language skill areas of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Since the acquisition process
follows this same progression, I try present new
concepts in the same order from listening to writing.
In
addition to providing a chance to practice the four
skills, I also like to give different learner styles
a chance to learn in the way they like best. Research
has shown us that we all learn in different ways.
Some of us are more visual and need to see things,
others are audile and like to hear it, and still
others are tactile and need a ghands onh approach
to learn best. By using a variety of activities
everyone gets a chance to have it their way.
